Guy's and St Thomas' diabetes dietetic service

At Guy's and St Thomas' Diabetes and Endocrinology Centre, diabetes specialist dietitians provide nutritional assessments and dietary advice and support to patients with diabetes. Advice is offered either through individual consultations or through group education programmes such as DAFNE or DESMOND, and takes account of the medical, social and cultural needs of the patient.

Who Is the Service For?

The service is for people residing in Lambeth who are diagnosed with diabetes, including adults, adolescents, children, the elderly, and women who are pregnant or planning a pregnancy. The latter group includes both women with established diabetes as well as those who are first diagnosed with diabetes when pregnant (gestational diabetes).

The service benefits patients by helping to optimise their nutritional status. By tailoring advice to the individual’s specific health needs, including their diabetes and lipid profile, this service aims to minimise risk of heart disease and contribute to weight management.

Contacting the Service

Diabetes specialist dietitians are based at the Diabetes and Endocrinology Day Centres at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals, and at a number of GP surgeries.

The service is provided from Monday to Friday from 9.00 am to 4.30 pm.

The goal of diabetes management is to reduce the harmful effects of having either too much or too little glucose in the blood by maintaining blood glucose levels within a target range.

Much of the dietary advice that is recommended for people with diabetes is similar to that for the rest of the population.
