Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust

Guy’s and St Thomas’ is one of the largest hospital trusts in the UK. It is based in central London with a staff of 12,500, a turnover of over £900m and over 1 million patient contacts every year. The Trust is made up of two of London’s oldest and most well known teaching hospitals. The hospitals have a long history, dating back almost 900 years, and have been at the forefront of medical progress and innovation since they were founded. Both hospitals have built on these traditions and continue to have a reputation for excellence and innovation. Department of Diabetes and Endocrinology
The Department of Diabetes and Endocrinology also has a long and distinguished history in pioneering advances in clinical care, including diabetes specialist nurses, home glucose testing monitors, and insulin pumps (CSII).

State-of-the-art diabetes care in provided in purpose-built centres. We see approximately 20,000 patients each year including patients from many other parts of the UK. Clinics are supported by ‘near-patient’ testing laboratories where routine tests for patients with diabetes are made available for consultations within 10 minutes.

There is a fully integrated multidisciplinary team including chiropody, dietetics, diabetes specialists nurses and counsellors, a full range of joint subspecialty clinics with obstetricians, vascular surgeons, renal physicians and paediatricians, a large insulin pump service, regular DAFNE patient education programs, prepregnancy counselling, and a district wide retinal screening program using digital retinal imaging. The department is extensively computerised with its own electronic health record system (Diabeta 3) which was also developed within the unit and is now used in many other centres in the UK and other parts of the world.

The department has close links with the community, primary care, intermediate care and PCTs and we are working hard with these groups and our partner Trusts to provide integrated diabetes care across south-east London.
